Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is lifelong condition. Although not all adults with ASD require psychiatric input, some adults have concurrent mental illnesses requiring additional support. Comorbid mental health problems occur in up to 70% of those with ASD and can have a significant effect on their functioning. The workshop will focus on mental health problems in adults with ASD. Presentation of common mental health problems in adults with ASD will be discussed in detail. The presenter will also discuss difference in clinical signs and symptoms of various mental illnesses in higher functioning individuals with ASD with that of presentation in individuals with ASD and intellectual disabilities. The workshop is designed to be interactive with the audience having opportunity to ask questions or share their experiences throughout the presentation.

Dr Yogesh Thakker is a Consultant Psychiatrist in Developmental Disability working as part of the COAST (Community Outreach Assessment and Support Team). He has been involved in developing Glenrose Adult Autism Diagnostic Clinic in Edmonton. He is a Clinical Lecturer in Department of Psychiatry, University of Alberta, Edmonton. He has done his membership in Psychiatry and higher training in Psychiatry of Developmental Disability from London, UK. He worked as a Consultant Developmental Disability Psychiatrist in the UK for two years before coming to Canada in September 2014. He has special interest in Autism Spectrum Disorder, teaching and health-care management. He developed Autism Diagnostic and Intervention Clinic in London, UK. He was a visiting lecturer in University of Hertfordshire, UK.
