Transitioning to Adulthood Workshop

An Information Session For Parents or Guardians of Youth with Special Needs

The transition from children’s services to adult services can be an exciting time in a young adult’s life, but it can also be a time of uncertainty and challenge for the family.  Children’s Link Society and McMan Youth Family and Community Services have designed a workshop for parents to address some the main issues for families who have youth ages 16 and up and moving into the adult service system.

Lorna Selig from Children’s Link will discuss the Transition Process as it relates to the following:

  • PDD – Persons with Developmental Disabilities
  • AISH – Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped
  • OPG - Office of the Public Guardian (Guardianship / Trusteeship)
Workshop Speakers:

Lorna Selig is the Transition Consultant at The Children’s Link Society.  She supports families to complete the documentation that is required for youth to move into the adult services system.  The whole process, although it may look daunting, can be done easily and smoothly with the system that Lorna has developed. Lorna co-facilitates the Transition Workshops, which are held twice monthly in collaboration with McMan Child and Family Services.  Lorna has established herself as a significant point of contact for families looking for support and information about transitioning their youth within Calgary and area.  As well, she is the chairperson for the Annual Transition Resource Fair.  Lorna is a former presenter for the MS Society of Canada, and teaches personal safety and self defense to children and adults with Safe4Life Personal Safety Training.
