The Ability Hub
The Ability Hub is a 17,000-square-foot space on the 3rd floor of the University of Calgary’s Child Development Centre, located in Calgary, Alberta. As one of the first initiatives of The Sinneave Family Foundation (Sinneave), the Ability Hub hosts activities that support the transition to adulthood of the growing population of adolescents, adults, and families living with autism.
Sinneave leads activities that allow us to directly connect with and consult key stakeholders, including individuals with autism, their families, and the broader support system. This informs ongoing strategy development and fosters iterative thinking, innovation, and knowledge mobilization in our efforts to enhance service and support to those living with autism.
Sinneave also partners with leading autism organizations to catalyze the development, evaluation, and sharing of promising practices to build community and systems capacity, ultimately improving the field. Several programs that support skill development in the areas where we seek outcomes (independence, education/training beyond high school, and labour market participation) are delivered by a variety of agencies operating out of The Ability Hub.
Some activities and service models previously enabled by Sinneave are now sustained in some form outside of The Ability Hub. These activities continue to enhance the system of services and supports available to individuals and families impacted by autism.
The Ability Hub was designed to address the needs of those with autism-related sensitivities and includes architectural features that minimize distractions and help individuals transition successfully throughout the space. The Ability Hub serves as a model for service providers, schools, and even families who are looking for best practices in creating positive, welcoming, and practical environments for individuals with autism. The facility is divided into classrooms, therapy rooms, multi-purpose rooms, and a self-contained apartment.
One of the ways Sinneave collaborates with the community is to open our doors to autism-related demonstration programs, workshops, presentations, tours, and meetings.
