Launch Into Life! Transition to Adulthood Workshop Series
Posted: November 23, 2015 in The Ability Hub News
The first Launch into Life! Workshop Series was a huge success! Parents and caregivers found the sessions “informative, helpful, and fun”, and they welcomed the opportunity to connect with other parents as well as to meet staff from the Resource Centre and the Launch Program at The Ability Hub.
The workshops encompassed the family’s journey from adolescence to adulthood with a focus on five key domains: Legal and Financial Issues, Independent Living Skills and Self-Advocacy, Communication and Social Relationships, Education and Employment, and Health and Well-Being. Through experiential activities, group work, and homework, participants were invited to identify and explore a range of “destinations, companions, speedbumps, construction zones, and rest stops” similar to what families experience on their journey or “road-trip” of life.
The interactive workshops provided families an opportunity to create and share visions and goals for their child’s future. This sharing fostered a sense of connection and community among parents, who sometimes experience isolation, especially as their children get older. Through the feedback collected at the end of each session, participants reported that they most enjoyed group conversations about important transition points across the lifespan, navigating and finding resources, discussions about the five domains, and the opportunity to set individualized goals with their child. Another aspect of the workshop series that was well-received by participants was the practice of some mindfulness techniques through guided meditations led by the workshop facilitators. This allowed parents a chance to re-connect with themselves, and focus on their own well-being through self-care.
We are excited to be offering the next Launch into Life! Workshop Series on January 20, 27 and February 3, 2016 (Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 8:30 pm) at The Ability Hub. Cost is $75 and includes program materials and parking in lot 54. To register visit the Launch into Life! Workshop Series page or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
