Opening Doors Housing Conference

The annual Opening Doors Housing Conference was held on National Housing Day, November 23rd in Calgary.
The 2016 Conference provided an opportunity for housing professionals and industry partners from across Alberta to discuss approaches to innovative, affordable housing. Some highlights from the conference include:
One Window Service
A new initiative by the City of Calgary is called One Window Service which would provide one entry point for those seeking low income housing in the city. The City is currently in the consultation phase with tenants and housing providers to ensure there is consensus on how best to design and implement the program. One Window Service would eliminate the need for those seeking supported housing to apply to multiple service providers.
Ready to Rent
Ready to Rent is a new program coming to Alberta from BC. Train-the-trainer sessions are planned for the New Year which will allow three aspects of the program to be provided here:
- RentSmart – a 12 hour certificate course which will give tenants the education and supports they need to find and maintain a home that works for them.
- RentReady – a condensed course designed to meet tenant needs in a short time frame and to start them off on their journey.
- RentED – education for landlords on how to be a great landlord and create stable tenancies.
